October, Aldo Leopold, & Burlington, Iowa
"I sometimes think that the other months were constituted mainly as a fitting interlude between Octobers." Aldo Leopold, Sand County Almanac.
The great ecologist and essayist, Aldo Leopold, was born in my hometown, Burlington, Iowa, on the Mississippi River in 1887 and died fighting a wild fire in Wisconsin in 1948. I’ve always felt an affinity for his ideas and his beautiful essays, especially since he grew up loving the same stretch of the river, the same bluffs, and the same floodplains that I did.
