"Leaving the Body"
I rarely win writing contests, so I was delighted to learn that I won the 2017 Hospital Drive Leaving Contest. (Hospital Drive is the literature, arts, and humanities magazine of the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine.) The topic was “Leaving” in the context of healthcare (wellness, illness, caregiving, etc.) My essay, "Leaving the Body," is about watching a hospice aide wash my mother's newly dead body -- such a heartbreakingly tender moment as this dear woman told my mother everything that she was doing to her and called her by name. Then, she helped me comb and plait my mother's hair and cut off the braid so I could keep it. I'll post the essay when it's published.
